Chiropractic Care for Spinal Conditions in Lincoln NE
Scoliosis is an abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine that is frequently first noticed during a visual exam of the spine. If scoliosis is suspected, an x-ray examination will confirm the presence or absence of the condition. The normal spine has a series of front-to-back curves, giving the spinal column a gently curving profile when seen from the side. In patients with scoliosis, the side-to-side spinal curves are most readily observed by looking at the spine from the back. When viewed from this direction, it looks as though the spine has C or S curves, and there may be some misalignment of the shoulders and hips as a result. Sometimes, the vertebrae are slightly rotated in the chest region, causing a noticeable hump. Most cases are considered mild with curving less than approximately 20 degrees.
Scoliosis usually begins during childhood, making it important to incorporate a scoliosis screening as part of a child's regular physical examinations. Screenings are sometimes done in physical education classes at school, and parents are notified if scoliosis is suspected. Mild cases are generally monitored closely to detect any worsening of the curves. Although the reason is currently unknown, girls are more prone to worsening of this condition. Chiropractic treatment options are discussed with patients or their parents after a diagnosis is made.
